John Adler (D-NJ) for House

Rep. Elect John Adler

Party: Democrat
State: New Jersey - 3rd District
Race Results: Overturning the status quo since 1882, Democrat John Adler narrowly defeated his Republican opponent in one of this year's most-watched House races.

New Jersey's third Congressional District is one of Democrats' best opportunities in 2008 to win a seat long held by Republicans. The seat has been held by Rep. Jim Saxton (R) since 1985. While Saxton's views are moderate for a Republican, central New Jersey has grown increasingly Democratic over the last twenty years. In late 2007, Saxton announced that he is retiring at the end of 2008. Political experts believe that State Sen. John Adler (D) is in a commanding position to win this open seat race.

Adler was elected to the New Jersey State Senate in 1991, where he serves as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee. Adler has been a forceful advocate on health care issues, and his Smoke-Free Air Act was the state's premier public health law in January 2006. New Jersey magazine named Adler one of its top ten state legislators, calling him "hardworking, incisive, and respected by both parties."

"We must take a leadership role in the world to get rid of the risks associated with nuclear weapons..."

Securing nuclear weapons and stockpiles is one of Adler's top priorities::

"We must take a leadership role in the world to get rid of the risks associated with nuclear weapons. First, we have to identify and secure nuclear materials such as uranium, nuclear intelligence, and weapons that are vulnerable to theft. We need to reduce our current stockpiles of nuclear weapons, work with our allies such as Russia to reduce its stockpile of weapons and safeguard its nuclear materials. We must also strengthen the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Keeping nuclear weapons out of the hands of terrorist organizations and rogue nations must remain a top priority."

Adler calls for a swift and responsible end to the war in Iraq:

"We are spending billions of dollars in Iraq that we should instead invest here at home toward affordable health care coverage, education, and jobs. I support a phased withdrawal of American troops and disagree with Sen. McCain's position that American troops may spend 100 years in Iraq."

Republican Chris Myers, Mayor of Medford, emerged victorious from his party's primary June 3. The district is served by both the New York and Philadelphia media markets - two of the most expensive in the country - so this will be a very expensive election.
